Udaipur

Hi everyone

The last stop on our Easter trip was Udaipur. It is called to be the most romantic city in Rajasthan. Not really sure about that, but it was absolutely a lot of nice places to see also there. Udaipur is maybe most known for its lake palace, where the James Bond movie “Octopussy” was shot. All over Udiapur you can see places like “Restaurant Octopussy”, “Hotel Octopussy”, and other places with references to that movie. A lot of roof top restaurants still show the movie, or at least they claim to do so. When we asked one of them to show it, they said that they had said it so many times before that they were not really interested. But we off course insisted and made it happen. Just after the film was over, we understood that they rather wanted to see the cricket match, off course…

But Udaipur is much more than James Bond. Most famous here is maybe the Lake Pichola. In years with bad rain it can be fully dry, but we were lucky and there was some quite good amount of water there. The first day we had a nice overview of the lake from a restaurant just outside the City Palace. A fabulous place to see the sun go down over the mountains behind the lake!

The second day in Udaipur we climbed all the way up to the Karni Mata temple. This is also known as the rat temple due to the number of rats that live there! Some people might find it not so nice, but we really enjoyed seeing it. If you ever go to Udaipur, I would highly recommend taking the trip to the temple. You can either use a cable way or walk up. We did something in the middle; taking the cable up and then walk down. From the temple you have a fantastic view of most of Udaipur! It really give you an opportunity to get an overview of the city, and from here you can pick the places that you like to see later on. While we were there, there was some “construction work” going on. And this was all done by hand! And most of it was done by girls.

They were using donkeys to get the material up the hill, and then doing their work.

After having been some time at the temple, we walked down to the city palace. This is a huge, huge palace that was first started on in 1559, and has been worked on by different rulers ever since that. The City Palace in Udaipur was built in a flamboyant style and is considered the largest of its type in Rajasthan, a fusion of the Rajasthani and Mughal architectural styles, and was built on a hill top that gives a panoramic view of the city and its surrounding, including several historic monuments such as the Lake Palace in Lake Pichola, the Jag Mandir on another island in the lake, the Jagdish Temple close to the palace, the Monsoon Palace on top of an overlooking hillock nearby and the Neemach Mata temple. These structures are linked to the filming of the James Bond movie Octopussy, which features the Lake Palace and the Monsoon Palace. The subsequent publicity has resulted in the epithet of Udaipur as “Venice of the East”.

Sorry, but I have again had my network problems, so difficult to upload pictures. Will try to edit this post later.

Talk to you soon!
